Monticello, NY – Sullivan County Director of Real Property Tax Services Ed Homenick announces the release of the County’s new Geoportal.
“This is a new tool I’m very excited to have our Office bring to the public,” Homenick affirms. “It will greatly expand and simplify the ways people can find a range of information, from tax maps to specific parcel data to natural and manmade features throughout Sullivan County.”
The Geoportal gives residents, visitors, and businesses greater access to the GIS (Geographic Information System) Resources implemented by staff. Developed, designed, and maintained by Senior GIS/Tax Map Technician Jennifer Stone, the Sullivan County Online Geoportal offers GIS data, maps, and apps free to the public.
“The Geoportal allows the people of Sullivan County to get the answers they need, when they need them,” says Stone. “Our desire is to leverage our data to foster community, facilitate informed decision-making, increase citizen participation, and create opportunities for economic development. Our Geoportal can help achieve that aim.”
Business operators, landowners and real estate developers, for example, can now easily search for, filter, and export timely, high-quality GIS (spatially located) data. One of the most highly sought-after resources, this data can be used in private or commercially owned GIS or spreadsheet software, at no cost. Researching such info has never been easier, with pop-ups that link directly to the assessment and ownership records for parcels of interest, plus widgets to measure features, add spatial data, search open data (free) GIS resources from reputable federal, state, county, and municipal sources, and print simple, self-made maps.
Users can use built-in search features to locate properties by SBL (Section-Block-Lot) numbers, addresses, road names, even landmarks. The apps make it easy to apply for a 911 address, submit a question regarding an address, obtain information about abutting parcels, and access up-to-date real property data on mobile and desktop devices.
From the Geoportal home page, visitors can still find cornerstone features such as Image Mate Online for property assessment and ownership data; Tax Lookup to search for most town, village, and school taxes; and the Sullivan County website itself.
“Ed, Jennifer and the entire complement of Real Property Tax Services staff remain committed to providing high-quality data available via the Internet and serving the people of Sullivan County in the best way possible,” says District 9 Legislator Alan Sorensen, chair of the Legislature’s Planning, Environmental Management and Real Property Committee. “To accomplish that goal, all data developed and maintained by the GIS staff is updated bi-weekly. I commend our crew who worked on this, and I think taxpayers will find the Geoportal a very handy use of their hard-earned dollars.”
“The Geoportal is the product of listening to the needs of residents, visitors, and businesses within Sullivan County and is the realization of a long-time goal,” concludes Stone. “The result is a website that brings the mountains to you, at a time and place of your convenience.”
