Sullivan County Celebrates America Recycles Day

Monticello, NY – The Sullivan County Department of Solid Waste and Recycling is pleased to announce that Wednesday, November 15 is America Recycles Day.

America Recycles Day, a Keep America Beautiful national initiative, is the only nationally-recognized day dedicated to promoting and celebrating recycling in the United States.  Each year, people across the country participate by promoting environmental citizenship and taking action to increase and improve recycling in America.

Sullivan County exports approximately 65,000 tons of garbage each year for disposal, and if a greater quantity of this material could be managed locally as recycling, the amount of trash we export would diminish, lowering greenhouse gas emissions, saving energy and keeping more revenue local.

“Recycling at home and work instead of throwing it away saves money and decreases the amount of garbage we pay to dispose of in distant landfills,” advises District 7 Legislator and Public Works Committee Chairman Joe Perrello. “Together, we can reduce the amount of material going to these distant landfills and, by recycling, give our garbage ‘another life’.”
