Sullivan County’s 4th Annual Stream Clean Up June 5th, 2010

(Monticello) – County Manager David P. Fanslau announced today that Sullivan County will hold the fourth annual Stream Clean UP on Saturday, June 5, 2010. “Volunteers are needed.   Please join us in cleaning up our waterways and improving our watersheds in Sullivan County,” said Luiz C. Aragon, Commissioner of the Division of Planning and Environmental Management.

“A stream cleanup is a great way to increase awareness of storm water issues while improving wildlife habitats, water quality and aesthetics.  It is important to keep our streams, rivers and waterways clear of trash and debris. A build up of litter can lead to increased flooding issues,” said Fanslau.

We want YOUR help to select locations for this year’s stream clean up.  If you know of a section of stream or river in need of some TLC, let us know.  When choosing a site for nomination, please consider the following:

  • Access - is it easy to get to?
  • Safety - is it too steep? Is the current too strong?
  • Size - is it large enough for a group of people?

Call the Sullivan County Planning office with your nominations or to volunteer.  The Planning office may be reached at 845-807-0527 or by e-mail at planning@co.sullivan.ny.us.  Nominations will be accepted until April 30th, 2010.

“It is our hope that through this program we will raise awareness throughout the County and encourage people to keep our streams and waterways clean,” concluded Fanslau.

Remember:  You are the Solution to Water Pollution!
